I’ve been using Articulate Presenter 09 for a couple of months now and have come up with the five things I like best about the new version. Articulate has released two updates to Presenter 09 and most of the problems I had have been cleared up, or I’ve found workarounds. Thank you, Articulate.

In 2007, most of the options for creating interactive elearning required Flash. If you wanted to build courses, you were required to either learn Flash or hire a Flash programmer. But along came the PowerPoint-to-Flash products. They enabled people to create their content in PowerPoint and convert it to the Flash.

In 2007, when Flash was king, I stated that the e-learning tools would evolve and become easier to use. You’d no longer need to learn specialized skills like Flash and ActionScript. This wasn’t a prediction of Flash’s demise. One of their Flash programmers built a player that could dynamically load content.

Articulate isn’t part of the ‘rapid authoring tool’ family for nothing. Unlike Adobe Flash, output in Articulate interactions have Flash content, and launch in Flash player, but this Flash content is self contained, and ‘invisible’ to the user. It’s familiar. It’s straightforward.

To demonstrate this, I deconstructed an effective elearning course originally built in Flash and then built a mock up in PowerPoint. Production notes: Clicking on the text bubble links you to another slide with the character’s text on it. Clicking on the person links you to a slide with a feedback box.

It works with Twitter and the screencasts play as Flash on the web. Add Screenr Videos to Your Blogs, Wikis, and Slides. If you use the Articulate products, you can the web object feature to add videos to your slides. Below is an example of the Screenr video embedded in a slide using the web object feature.

The challenge in all of this is that rapid elearning has to bring real value and isn’t just a bunch of PowerPoint files converted to Flash and then put online. The worst of elearning is paying a Flash programmer to produce something like this for a lot more money. My measure of success is not slides viewed.

Instead I create the background images to use in my PowerPoint slides so it’s easy to just swap out the background. One quick question…How do you do the annotation on your slides inside of Articulate? Is there an Articulate update I missed to allow you to do this? Make a few variations of the template.

Get rid of those things that might make noise, flash lights, or do something else to get your attention while recording. For example, 720×540 is the aspect ratio for a PowerPoint slide. 980×560 is perfect for videos in the no sidebar view mode in Articulate Presenter. Does your chair squeak? Prepare Yourself.

Storyline continues on the success of the Articulate Studio product line with a new, yet familiar feeling authoring tool. While no longer a PowerPoint plugin like Articulate Presenter, Storyline maintained an interface very similar to PowerPoint. Flash has its limitations, but currently so does support for HTML5.

Back then, most e -learning was custom-built in Flash. However, with Articulate Presenter and PowerPoint we could build about 80% of what we needed. So our default was Articulate Presenter unless we could justify why it didn’t meet our needs. As a final option we custom built our courses in Flash.

However, it never fails that once someone knows you’re using PowerPoint to build the rapid elearning course, they apply the same rules to your elearning course that they’d apply to presentations. In a presentation, the slide is all you see.

Use a Blank Slide as Your Starting Point. But the default PowerPoint templates encourage bullet point lists and boring slides. Start with a blank slide. Personally, I like to start with the title only slide. Then, I go into the master slide and move the title off screen (like you see in the image above).
