The summer is always a busy season for industry conferences and eLearning networking opportunities, and one event near and dear to my heart is the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning held in Madison, Wisconsin. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event, and leaders in the distance learning field will be there to speak and present on eLearning-related topics such as MOOC models for education, mobile learning, blended learning, social media for learning, learning analytics, and much more.

Just released is the eLearning Guild’s new report, Mobile Learning: The Time Is Now , put together by Clark Quinn, who really knows his stuff on this topic. Before that, the very idea of mobile learning was a bit bizarre. In some respects m-learning is no big deal, because mobile devices are already ubiquitous and essential performance aids. The end result of all this won’t always be learning, but it will be enhanced performance and surely that’s what really matters. If Clark says the time is now, it probably is. Their jobs are inherently mobile.

Much fuss is made of class-size effects in schools, but I often get blank stares when I talk about the dangers of putting 10,000 people together in an online learning environment. This might be OK in an environment with no social interaction, but what about where we are trying to foster Social Learning? Increasingly, the call is going out for some sort form of Social Learning to be a part of our online learning initiatives. People typically ask the question because they are tasked to build an hour of learning and want a better sense of how much content creation that means. Instead of asking about screen count (which is driven more by dumping information) focus on how to create meaningful elearning that will make the hour more productive for the learner.

Then I went on to show about 12 tools in more detail – some of which would probably make it onto a top ten list (Flash, Captivate, Articulate, and Lectora) – the remaining tools trying to hit at some of the other options out there (Smart Builder, eXe, Udutu, Thinking Worlds, Raptivity, Flypaper, Mohive, and Atlantic Link). I’ve been digging around to see if I can find an actual top ten list. And of course, the tool needs to fit the purpose, so one tool won’t fit all.
