There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. What happened?

I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools.

It is worth the extra dollars to purchase a LMS that comes built in with an authoring tool. Actually, I see no real advantage for having a built-in authoring tool, other than it generates some more revenue for the vendor. But it is a rapid e-learning authoring tool stripped down, nothing more. E-Learning 24/7.

The cost of you to build a course via a 3rd party authoring tool (base on the license and not, on your salary or whoever you have working in your company creating them) is $1,495 (the fee usually Articulate charges, since many use them. The cost of the system to you is $50,000. . I wouldn’t, but that’s just my take). .

While the assumption would be that all the products are alike, or that fee based tools are superior to their free counterparts, nothing could be farther than the truth. Once you did though, you could do quite a lot with the tool.

Once Articulate launches, I suspect you will see a greater swath of vendors adding it to their feature sets. However, in the coming months it is going to change.

Raptivity is an interaction tool. Its target audience is the rapid content authoring tool market, but while it tries to hit it, it also misses at many levels. Raptivity calls their product an interaction tool with templates, games, simulations, etc. Essentials has interactions that beat Articulate’s interactions.
