team-workThe main commentary on this site is around the elearning industry’s latest happenings and trends, but every now and again I like to touch on subjects that apply to any sector.

Whether you are an instructional designer, an accountant, or a salesman you are constantly hearing about new tips and strategies to help you master your craft.

Trade publications, associations, conferences, and professional organizations all provide great learning opportunities. The message across all of these is often the same: keep on learning, improving, and staying current.

Nothing is wrong with this. I encourage it.

However, what often is not talked about enough is the need for us to step away from our craft every once in a while.

Your Brain is a Muscle – Treat it Like One

I am amazed at the ideas that come to me when I take a moment to remove myself from my typical day-to-day responsibilities. I believe you will also find the same clarity by doing the same.

For example, if you work in the elearning field as an instructional designer then taking some time away from your projects may allow you to think of new ways to present course content. Often times these ideas come when you are not even thinking about work!

Think about it this way: Olympic athletes train nearly every day in their craft. Part of that training regiment are rest days where they let their muscles recover. Without this rest day they cannot perform at their peak ability.

Your brain is a muscle. Give it a rest day (or multiple days) so that it too can recover and perform at an elite level.
