I should note this was the same issue at ASTD in Dallas, where your only options were “difficult to find coffee cart”, “bring your own” or “Starbucks” Guess what? Considering that plenty of smaller shows give free coffee, how hard is it for ASTD to do the same? The Starbucks line was big as well.

Remember the days when ATD (then known as ASTD) was all about ILT, consultants selling books and other items? I’d argue that ATD is so strong on e-learning, that their ATD TK show no longer is of use, because it was originally designed to be e-learning driven, to offset the heavy ILT focus of ASTD. . ASTD now called ATD - Once referred to as Association of Training and Development – a worldwide association for T&D folks, they changed their name to ATD – Association of Talent Development. In my opinion it has outweighed its usefulness. Great for the 70’s, in 2014 not so much.

ASTD TK12 had a lot of nuances that offered nearly something for everyone. ASTD International is nice, but you get everyone there, not just e-learning. I know why people love Yammer, but its fee based product is not super low cost. Right now until they make some wowsa factors in it, it is in my “not recommend” section.

ASTD TechKnowledge – if you are an e-learning vendor this is a must show for you. ASTD International – This year it is in Denver, and again it often is a mixed bag. On a side note, the leads vs. waste of time is a common theme when attending trade shows that are not directly targeting your specific niche or vertical.

Bottom Line Technologies that were created for the populus, or business outcomes, or specific entities, have in the past, been tapped in the learning and training markets, including e-learning. Web Conferencing, WebEx, was widely used in the tech space in the early 2000’s.

Lots of ILT vendors – again, the show has always been geared towards this, so no surprise, in fact, ATD formally known as ASTD has always been heavy on ILT and book things, and just in the last few years has seen a major increase in e-learning vendors, with the past show being nearly 50% – the highest ever.

This really could be seen at the ASTD International show which has always been known as a true ILT (instructor led training) angle, with materials. . While I did stipulate that I saw Kinect technology more so than AR in e-learning, the truth be told, vendors stayed away. . Bottom Line.

Maybe ASTD can learn a few things here – cause they never seem to solve the same issues, year after year. Vendors were finding that their Wi-Fi was slow – surprise, surprise. Glad to see they have to pay for that speed. Do they get a refund – DevLearn? Overall, a good first day, and smoothly run. That’s it for now.
