Vendors of packaged training courses filled ASTD’s exhibit halls. Members of the Instructional Systems Association, a group of business owners, wryly called ASTD “the union.” The Board enlisted the help of identity consultants and branding experts and eventually decided on a new name: ASTD. It’s wise for ASTD to drop training from its name.

Review of ASTD International Trade Expo

With great anticipation I entered the huge expo at ASTD International show earlier this week. would estimate that there was a 60-40 split, still instructor led driven, but even a significant number of the ILT vendors were offering subsets or capabilities to turn their ILT into online via webinars or online courses. If you think they used the ASTD app and wrote down some notes, I think you would be surprised. The course they show you uses educational terms, not corporate terms – which is funny since the product i.e. integration with is purely corporate.

Apparently there must be a huge demand for scalping ASTD badges or hood winking ASTD for access into their show. If I could give ASTD a grade it would be a massive F. dominKnow – has come out with a responsive capability, enabling you to create, edit and save a mobile look for your course. Design Day and the ASTD Big Question for July

Around the same time, the ASTD Learning Circuits Blog had the July "Big Question" which was "Choosing Tools" which is actually a series of questions: How does the eLearning design process need to change to accommodate such a wide variety of tools? Yes, of course it will continue. I left a comment on Tony Karrer's blog about creating a "Design Day" so that everyone in the blogosphere adds a comment about the importance of instructional design as opposed to focusing on technology. It is a great entry outlining 3 elements of good design. Do they need to learn new tools constantly?

SaaS product – but here’s the thing – if you want the course to be in your LMS – it can but it still sits on the ZZ server side and not in your system (should note that the LMS connectivity is available only in the $40/u version). It really doesn’t get any easier then using this product, but while it is not ideal as a standalone it is perfect as a component within your course. Of course you had to sit down and go through the presentation/demo of Presenter – but still – nice one. Wow, wasn’t that marching band fantastic?

Back for another installment of the ASTD international trade show. In this amazing episode we find out that not all mobile devices are really mobile (according to a vendor), the new six letter word is Tin Can, mobile only products still exist, my game is your game and ASTD did not offer a breakfast for us. Let me paint you a picture. I am checking out a soft skills course specifically for mobile. I see that they are showing smartphones in their booth will their product. Okay, the first day of ASTD TK13 has wrapped up – at least from the expo side of the house. It’s one big drawback – no support for SCORM, but hey, since it is ideal for sticking in to your course, rather than as a standalone authoring tool, it works. Follows a conversational approach to learning – which is so much better than hearing the word and then repeating it, with zero idea on what it means and more importantly, how to use it in general conversation. I see it not only as a standalone but also as a course or courses within a learning platform.
