I get a lot of questions about how to move past the PowerPoint look when building rapid elearning courses. My first suggestion if you’re working with PowerPoint is to step away from the original content. A good example is with office-themed templates. August 15 & 16: Houston, TX ( ASTD Houston ).

If you can step away from the “bullet point” mindset and all of the complaints, you’ll see that PowerPoint’s got a lot to offer those who build elearning courses. It doesn’t need to have that PowerPoint look. PowerPoint offers a pretty good selection of animations that let you mimic a lot of what you see in Flash. Blank screen.

What I’d do is treat each screen the same as a slide and then use clickable icons to reveal the course’s information. For example, instead of a screen with eight bullet points, I’d have a screen with eight icons. Each icon would have a label and when clicked would display additional information. ILT forces the learner to learn at the speed of the instructor, so if the instructor is flying through the information, you as the learner have no choice but to follow that path. In the end, it is a talking head with PowerPoint. ASTD is not the only ones. Read It, Believe It. You will be shocked.
