Without any context, a pyramid generally will tell you that the information is weighted based on its position in layers and that there’s usually some sort of interconnected sequential relationship. So I went back and realized that there was no relationship between the information and how it was stacked in the pyramid.

Often a client wants a course but isn’t quite clear how the course actually makes a difference, other than the fact that the learner gets exposed to additional information. Is it about information or performance? Information courses are more like marketing programs that promote awareness with no immediate performance expectations.

Real learning isn’t a one-time event (like many elearning courses) where it’s just a matter of getting new information. I know that many customers want to lock navigation so that they “get all of the information.” Give them ways to collect information. Learning is a funny thing. This is faulty thinking. Focus on relevance.

This loaded information about the video. The value in clicking to load the information is that unlike the dragging, you don’t have to move the mouse. It’s a little more efficient and it locks the information on the screen until another user action. But that doesn’t mean that they work equally the same in your interaction design.

If the course is only information, then it’s hard to make it interactive. If it’s only an information-based course, or if the client only cares about marking the course complete, then it may be easier to do a simple linear course than waste the learner’s time navigating an interactive module. This is a common challenge. Great question.

Instead of asking about screen count (which is driven more by dumping information) focus on how to create meaningful elearning that will make the hour more productive for the learner. ASTD held TechKnowledge in San Jose this year. It was, as the Michelin Guide would say, “worth the journey.&# Or leaks private information? I attended ASTD, eLearning, Online Learning, Elliott Masie’s TechLearn, Training, ISPI (then NSPI), and many others. One was precisely what I was looking for.
