Kirkpatrick Revisited | Social Learning Blog

Dashe & Thomson

I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. Well, based on where Kirkpatrick and his son James are today, I was completely wrong.

50 Years of the Kirkpatrick Model

Upside Learning

In November 1959, Donald Kirkpatrick published a series of seminal articles on training evaluation in the ‘Journal of the ASTD’. A compelling chain of evidence demonstrates your bottom-line value – Authors mention L1 and L2 as consumptive metrics, L3 and L4 are classed as impact metrics. You can download the paper here.

Dashe & Thomson

Recent research by ASTD and REED Learning indicates that the top skills desired by Learning & Development departments are measuring and evaluating training. Then we need to identify specific metrics to demonstrate and deliver on those expectations. Kirkpatrick calls this Return on Expectations, or ROE.

Why We Should Stop Talking About ROI in Training

Mindflash

Many people look at Don Kirkpatrick ’s work from as early as 1959 as the beginning of ROI in learning and development. It was in his early work that Kirkpatrick developed his four-level model: Level 1: Reaction. In concept, Kirkpatrick’s levels seem valuable. We Don’t Need New Metrics. Where Does ROI Fail?

We speak fluent Kirkpatrick. An ASTD benchmarking study looked at course evaluations by Kirkpatrick level. An ASTD benchmarking study looked at course evaluations by Kirkpatrick level. ASTD’s own studies of practice, and others, show steady increases in the use of technology for learning and performance.
