PowerPoint’s designed as a presentation tool. While the application is versatile and great for elearning, many people still struggle to get past the PowerPoint look because the features are designed to encourage the use of the templates. The key is to learn to see the features from a different perspective.

I get a lot of questions about how to move past the PowerPoint look when building rapid elearning courses. My first suggestion if you’re working with PowerPoint is to step away from the original content. Here’s a free PowerPoint template that features 10 layout options and also comes with a Quizmaker file.

There are a few common issues when working with rapid elearning tools. If you use Quizmaker ‘09, make sure to take advantage of the Slide View feature. Another issue is when working with PowerPoint. We tend to gravitate towards the templates and placeholder structure that PowerPoint provides.

This is my preferred approach for a course that uses a conventional interface like those that come with the rapid elearning players. In this case, she built the help instructions with the animations and audio in Quizmaker. I like it because it used a game-like approach to show a less conventional use of rapid elearning tools.
