6 Honest New Year’s Resolutions for 2021

It’s that time of year again, where we all solemnly swear that the double helpings of holiday desserts will be our last foray into sweet treats until Spring, and we’re absolutely not staying up until 1 am bingeing the Queen’s Gambit, as we’re going to guarantee 8 hours of sleep every single night. But this year has been a rough one for us all. So here are 6 more believable resolutions for 2021 – and this time, we mean it.

We Really Really Will Hit the Gym

We know, you’ve heard it all before. But this year, we know what it’s like when the gyms and fitness centers close their doors, and our only option is to pound the pavement avoiding dogs and strollers, and force ourselves into running shorts to jog outdoors at sub-zero temperatures. If you only open up the gym again, complete with changing rooms and showers, heated pool, carpeted floors, and *cough* vending machines, we guarantee we will be there every single day. Besides, for the moment – stretchy gym wear seems to be by far the most flattering item of clothing in our closets.

We Will Rely on the Experts

What are some of the things you’ve done this year that you usually left to those that were trained? From hair-cutting and shoe-sizing, DIY home repair and gardening, to impromptu new businesses such as baking, and graphic design, or random hobbies triggered by sheer boredom like new languages or coding skills… haven’t we all learned enough? While in previous years people might add learning something new to their list of new year’s resolutions, we feel pretty accomplished this year already. In 2021, we’ll keep the learning and training to work-related endeavors, and call it a day in our personal lives, thank you very much.

We Will Spend Less Time with Family

We all love our nearest and dearest, but this year – I’d love to be able to say ‘sayonara’ to the people under my roof, and go spend some time away from the ones closest to me. After a whole year of seeing them day in and day out, repeating the same stories because frankly, there is no-one else to tell… I’d absolutely love to see someone outside of my family, thanks! It’s hard to believe that this time last year we were all canceling plans at the last minute to stay at home in pajamas with our spouses, as if that was the treat! This year, we’re not canceling any plans with friends, and we’re saying yes to every single party or event invite that comes our way. Well, for a few months at least!

We Say, “No More Zoom… Please!”

Spending less time in front of a screen is usually a resolution reserved for watching too much TV, but in 2020, work-time became screen time. How many webinars do you think you watched last year, and how many Zoom meetings did you attend? As executives can often be in meetings for as many as 23 hours per week, we should all be worrying about going square-eyed! Don’t judge us for resolving to have more in-person meetings for 2021, complete with Susan who wears too much perfume, Alex who chews his pen lid, and Alice who can’t seem to last the 15-min daily scrum without a snack. All is forgiven.

We Will Change How We View Travel

Most of us had trips or plans canceled in 2020 or had to push off bucket list items for the foreseeable future. But whatever grand plans you had on the agenda, whether that was a hen or a stag to Vegas, a trip of a lifetime ‘down under, or a family outing to Disneyworld, we bet your expectations have lowered somewhat.

This year, any travel will do, if only we can get out of our own four walls! A night with friends at a hotel you regularly drive past on your way to the supermarket? Sounds awesome! Romantic trip to Libya? Without the kids? Yes, please. A mini-break to North Korea? Sure, I’ll give it a try, how bad can it be?

We Will Enter Our Own ‘Roaring 20’s’

“The roaring twenties is often associated with gluttony, rapid economic growth, and living life to the fullest.” This year, Forbes estimates that we have the ingredients in place for our own roaring twenties, and we couldn’t agree more! While in other years we are talking about eating less, spending less, and living a quiet satisfied life, this year, we’re all about living life to the max! Whether that’s saying yes to the second slice of chocolate cake, splashing out on the big ticket items we would traditionally call “irresponsible”, or pushing ourselves to grow and achieve more professionally, in 2021 – we’re not holding back!
