Help! What software tool should I use to record audio?

Many devices and industry-standard elearning tools offer simple and effective software for recording audio. One of our authors who was just getting started with elearning never before had had the need to record audio—and asked for advice on tools. This article lays out some of your options, focusing on simple voice-recording tools for your personal computer.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. If you are an e-learning developer or instructional designer this has always been a favorite feature of authoring tools. Open Source eLearning Tools

I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile. Beyond that, probably the best thing to do is to use eLearning Learning to go through it’s open source eLearning and open source eLearning Tools. Here’s some of what I pulled out.

Articulate, Captivate and Lectora – Do they deserve your praise?

I wasn’t thunderstruck, but what I was surprised at was the number of folks who had or were about to purchase the well known authoring tools in the market, Articulate, Captive and Lectora. If they are unfamiliar with the size and scope of the authoring tool market as many people are, then it makes sense to do what others do – and buy the well known brands. When people think authoring tools, three products typically come to mind. Their video encode program is lackluster, you are better off using Audacity – which is free. Lectora.

The first time I have had fun creating courses via a course authoring tool in 15 years. Audio recorder/editor/capture tool. If you prefer to have multiple layers of recordings for one record, I strongly recommend using Audacity (which is free), then save and export the recording to Storyline. As a result, I recorded in Audacity and then used various plugins to enhance it, including the changing of tempo and pitch. Audacity (Creating) Easy to use. Jing (Creating) I've done some horrendous jobs where I have been tasked to sit down and shoot, then edit, hundreds of screens of system sim, in Captivate and Camtasia, and other far less handy tools. So, here they are: 1. I have Google on almost permanent standby, especially so now (see 10). Great results.
