Adobe Captivate – easy kick-off into video tutorials

Just started with Captivate 2019, I needed to do a video tutorial for a design software package, I had never done anything like it before. Within about 15 minutes I had screen recording up and running, corrected audio soon followed and there was my first video (audio is much trickier than I thought, plus hearing one’s own voice takes a bit of getting used to!).

I can’t wait to explore the other tools for my Graphic Design Fundamentals course I am putting together.

Takes my design as well as my lecturing to a new level and opens it up to a new audience!

Thanks for posting this tutorial. I suppose you were creating a Video Demo? If that is the case, just one tip: try to split up the recording. To have the correct timing, you’ll capture the video demo with a draft audio. Then edit the video if necessary. Later on record the audio separately, I use a dedicated application (Audition, but the free Audacity will do the trick as well). Keep in mind the time of the clip. Replace the original draft audio by the new one.

Second tip: do not capture too long clips, better to have several clips (you can add a recording after the previous one from the Insert menu). That makes it also much easier later if you want to turn the video into an interactive video.

Thanks so much for the tips Lieve, really appreciate it. I do have Adobe Creative Cloud subscription so have access to Audition as well as Premiere Pro.

I must say it’s a lot harder than anticipated, I am used to being a classroom-based instructor so this is a whole new ball game…I need all the help I can get.

I have a prefessor in college as well, but was happy to discover Captivate for many reasons. First reason was for my IT-courses (had quite a lot of them, next to technical building courses). Second reason was for the new distant-learning students and students from other European countries taking courses at our college.

You have one big advantage over many eLearning course developers: you do have acquired pedagogical skills as classroom based instructor. During my consultancy and training (Captivate) jobs I see that is often lacking.
