We get lots of questions about our opinion on the major e-learning authoring tools. There have been a lot of changes to the authoring tool landscape in the last 12 months, so I thought I’d update it. . Lectora is $1600 for the core e-learning software, while their Inspire suite with extra multi-media tools is $2500.

The features are a mix of things we’ve all come to expect in a robust authoring tool with at least one feature that will even excite the power users. The shapes in Lectora version 12 will be greatly improved to support the same kind of options we’ve come to know and love in PowerPoint shapes.

I just came back from ASTD’s TechKnowledge conference in Las Vegas where I held a Creation Station on how to create a branching scenario in Captivate. Whether you are using Captivate, Lectora, Articulate, or any other tool, it is certainly important to know which buttons to click to set it up properly. Happy branching!

The improvements focus on designer usability and provide PowerPoint-like flexibility when working with text, images, shapes, and buttons. We expect these new features will save us time on development, as we previously had to use external tools to create the effects that are now available natively in Lectora 12.

After trying sticky notes and PowerPoint slides, what ultimately worked best for me was creating an old-school outline of all of the slide topics, adding corresponding bits and pieces of information from the source materials, and then including all of the required components (such as learner interactions, video of the subject matter expert, etc.)

Captivate 8 now has custom color themes, similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, which let you create a custom color palette of 8 colors. You can create your own palette, save and share palettes, and even import palettes from other sources such as Photoshop.
