The era of web-based authoring systems is here. We’ve been using our own collaborative web-based development tool, CourseCreate, at Web Courseworks for the past 15 years. We recently decided to test drive Claro and Composica, and here’s some of what we’ve learned in our exploration of these tools.

When looking at the state of the authoring tool space, two words come to mind. And for the entire rapid content authoring tool space, I have to ask – Why? The point is that an authoring tool should not just go along, but go beyond. PowerPoint is presentation software. Bewilderment and Confusion.

Built-in audio narration tools including some editing. Screen capture and recording tool – I’m a big fan of this being included, but would like to see new capabilities beyond just the basics, then again, there are plenty of freebies out there that will do just fine. Social – Snooze.

Again, not every tool below is SaaS based, but at some point, you have to move to the SaaS world, especially if you are offering or saying you do – some type of mobile learning functionality. I’ve seen some authoring tools that fit most of the criteria above, but whose ease of use is substandard or even really bad.

Tools these days come in three flavors. Authoring Tools for developers. The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. MLOAT - Multimedia Learning Object Authoring Tool. A combination of both.

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Perhaps their audience is unaware of LMSs who offer assessment tools.
