Here at DevLearn 2011 in Las Vegas I've got authoring tools on my mind. Because I have been able to take a look at two new tools today, which I'm sure are going to have a major impact. But for me the PowerPoint add-in approach to authoring is an uncomfortable compromise. First up is Storyline from Articulate.

Developing is not for everyone

It’s beginning to dawn on me that a wide range of development tasks associated with e-learning, including the use of authoring tools, plus the post-production of graphics, animations, audio and video, are not going to be for everyone. Even the simplest authoring tasks require a lot of organisation.

The formula appears to be pretty consistent: Purchase some licenses for one of the more popular rapid authoring tools, typically Articulate / Adobe Presenter (for PowerPoint-based content) or Adobe Captivate (where there's more of an IT training bias).

I had an online demo of Rapid Intake's new online authoring tool Unison , and I must admit I was impressed. tool which, although not free, is pretty close. Users can build their own templates using Flash and XML and share them with the authoring community. Unison has the flavour of a web 2.0

Secondly, I've been doing some work for a client of mine that has an LMS with some authoring capabilities, trying to compare what they have to offer with what's available elsewhere. Everybody's got an authoring tool. Why on earth not?

Articulate has me lost for words

Although I have decades of experience using (and at one stage designing) more sophisticated e-learning authoring tools - you know, the highly configurable ones with their own scripting languages - I now find myself turning more and more often to the so-called rapid development tools.
