This is an insightful tool to understand why hierarchy and authority have a greater impact in some countries, in addition to the already prevailing organizational culture. Given the high power distance in a country like India, it is little wonder that most people accept authority and hierarchy more easily than perhaps in the West.

Questions came to be seen as a means of wielding authority or, in rare cases of order reversal, as a sign of rebellion or disrespect. Are extremely wary of questions and deem that as a threat to authority (ask too many questions and the chances are you will be thought of as a rebel, maybe even a negative influence).

To give an example, organizations where authority trumps expertise and capability are not yet ready for social learning where everyone gets an equal hearing. As soon as authority and credential is given greater power, collaboration and sharing will stop. This shift in mindset will perhaps be one of the most challenging to overcome.
