The other day, I was listening to an audiobook, and the author spoke about ideas. I thought about this, as you can tell, and said to myself, okay, let’s write a post where the e-learning history and thus learning systems, authoring tools, and alike are intertwined with good and bad ideas. The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. NetG ruined them). Instructional design was actually being used. Yep, readily available.

You can build your own via a 3rd party authoring tool. In addition to adding content, they are now expanding into additional platforms, authoring tools and so forth, but this is about content, so I’ll stay on the path. Who remembers NetG? NetG, was the evil empire of the days gone past – ok, in my mind.

The latter included an authoring tool, too. NetG, Element K, being just two. Adobe Captivate – They were not the first authoring tool in the industry; Authorware was the first commercial success, heavily used with CBT, and then even into WBT (web-based). Skillsoft – Dominated the course/content marketplace.

I used to pitch up against some of the "big guys" -- NetG, SkillSoft -- who do some custom development, but the clients would choose our small shop because we provided better customer service. Denise has a really good point about the high-touch quality of the custom development houses, which is so essential in this biz. Take the Survey!
