Adobe Captivate – They were not the first authoring tool in the industry; Authorware was the first commercial success, heavily used with CBT, and then even into WBT (web-based). Anyway, Captivate lost its way. Lectora will note the same, but I never found it to be an RCAT. Onto the Show.

I “grew-up&# in eLearning world using Director/Authorware and then moving into Flash/HTML (PPT was “off-limits&# ). In the past few years I’ve started using Articulate and Captivate to do the heavy lifting and using Flash more for specific parts of the overall course.

No, I do not use Authorware now, but it is hard to predict what will be an essential tool 10 years down the road. The list does include older tools like Authorware, which are no longer being supported and definitely missing a tool or two. But this could be a great place for an organization to start sorting through the mess of tools out there. I looked at that list of 120 and many of the tools I'd never heard of either.

If it's an e-learning tutorial that you're after, including the usual mix of multimedia and interactions, then you have to make an important choice, between tools that you install on your desktop and online tools: Desktop tools ( Flash , Authorware , Lectora , etc.) It's OK to have lots of tools, if you can afford them.

I learned Toolbook and Authorware on my own while in the program. It seems to me that a lot of companies really want a lot of the micro (the job descriptions require Flash, Captivate, etc.) Im one of the unfortunate ones with a actual honest to goodness Masters Degree in EdTech. The degree opens many doors but thats about it.

Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. Adobe Captivate. Macromedia Director. HTML and Javascript. That was pretty much it.
