A couple of weeks ago, David posted a challenge where community members were asked to share their storyboard templates. As you can see, there were quite a few different storyboard templates shared for downloads. A lot of this changed when we shifted from custom development in Flash and Authorware to Articulate Studio and PowerPoint.

Adobe Captivate – They were not the first authoring tool in the industry; Authorware was the first commercial success, heavily used with CBT, and then even into WBT (web-based). Skills building/development/ongoing feature sets are awesome. They do the entire Talent Development Platform features and reqs to a T.

PowerPoint is not E-Learning and shouldn’t be used as your course tool/development – For whatever reason, there are people who have been around online learning for years, who still see PPT as a means for the creation of content – i.e. courses. I’ve used a bunch of desktop authoring tools – Lectora, Dreamweaver, Authorware, Captivate, and Articulate to name a few. I was kind of out of that aspect (development) of e-learning at the time they started becoming more mainstream. I wish it had been around when I was pulling my hair out learning Authorware.

Templates, themes, debug tool (nice), translation tool (nice too). Beginners – zero tech skills to advanced – with tech skills – preferably ID and e-learning developer folks. Custom learning paths, templates. However, if you are an ID or e-learning developer person, this is not the product for you.

The world of authoring tools started at the advanced level, Authorware, Toolbook and to an extent DazzlerMax. You either needed a tech skill set (at least moderate) or authoring tool design/development experience and preferably both. Actually it was more of Dreamweaver that came with templates (at least IMO). Basic 2 Advanced.

Templates including ones for layout, quizzes. If you are creating a product geared towards ID and e-learning developers it should not be as easy as using PowerPoint. It occurred in the templates section. I found my issue when going first to insert slides then select templates. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Templates with some learning objects? Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. People who are not WBT instructional designers or content developers or have a deep background in either field and are now handed off the task of creating content/courses.

As a developer, the single biggest flaw I have experienced with any testing and reporting methods is the disconnect between the tested project and the feedback given by the testers. When a project is ready for testing the developer can publish the project as a review app. Adobe Captivate 4 addresses this in a wonderful way.
