What is eLearning, really? For the last ten years, I’ve developed training in some capacity. I’ve used everything from Authorware to PowerPoint to create materials. I remember a couple years ago a co-worker asked me what software program converted content to eLearning.

Is PowerPoint the most widely used tool for eLearning development? It seems that everywhere I go in the eLearning world I run into PowerPoint. I “grew-up&# in eLearning world using Director/Authorware and then moving into Flash/HTML (PPT was “off-limits&# ). Should it be?

In response to the demand for more accessible authoring tools, Authorware was born. Using Authorware , learning professionals could create learning programs with hyper-simplistic designs, primarily through dragging and dropping icons. Although this made eLearning infinitely more user-friendly to create, it came at a price.

The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. It’s free.

Compared to building courses in Flash or Authorware, the rapid elearning tools are easy to use. Create a simple 10 slide PowerPoint file. These are very similar to Flash components and Authorware Knowledge Objects, in that developers are able to create pre-configured logic and visual components which accept parameters when inserted into Captivate. Improved PowerPoint Import PowerPoint import in Captivate 4 has been greatly improved.

Michael Allen, the man who created/invented Authorware, has started developing a new tool. This presentation was his opportunity to introduce the tool to the eLearning developer community, explain his reasons for creating it, and to get feedback on his direction.
