I “grew-up&# in eLearning world using Director/Authorware and then moving into Flash/HTML (PPT was “off-limits&# ). Good instructional design skills can be applied anywhere. I was using DazzlerMax and Authorware, which are superior offerings for creating courses. I didn’t like it and saw no benefit since Cornerstone already had a legit LXP in their system, including the whole skills piece, the third-party content, and the other standards. At the time, I hated it. It is sort of in the middle.

The world of authoring tools started at the advanced level, Authorware, Toolbook and to an extent DazzlerMax. You either needed a tech skill set (at least moderate) or authoring tool design/development experience and preferably both. Storyline 360 is not a 100% cloud based authoring tool, just fyi. Basic 2 Advanced. This is a big jump.

Administration side is difficult to use, you need advanced technical skills. Assumptions that administrators either have extensive high technical skill sets or are IS/IT people or have an IT/IS resource on call, whenever they need them. Programming Skills need not apply. UI is challenging, if not very difficult.

Another post I just saw on LinkedIn talked about ID folks who needed to have LMS admin skill sets, as though what the people doing the hiring really wanted was a jack of all trades person, thus saving them money from hiring two people. I was one of the few in my program that had media production, programming, graphics design, and web skills. This is not the same thing as picking some templates and scenarios and building, rather a strong sim will expect you to have instructional design and e-learning development skills. One sim tool I know costs 25K per license, but the majority of pure sim tools in the market cost way way below that. . If you are new, you can build.

Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. The learning curves went from somewhat challenging to somewhat easy, but you really needed some tech skill sets. A growing audience who lack tech skills, but are not necessarily new to the industry. That has changed.

If they mean easy, because you have intermediate or advanced tech skill sets, then yes it is easy. If you have limited or no tech skills, then no it is not easy. Reminds me of the days of Authorware, but with less complexity and anger, plus with more features and usefulness for the developer. Tech skill – intermediate.
