Blackboard’s identity crisis, Desire2Learn’s optimism, and Instructure’s coolness

George Siemens

Since Blackboard announced its acquisition of several Moodle partners, numerous voices have chimed in to explore what it means to education. common response to the longterm impact of these acquisitions has been to link Blackboard’s manoeuvre with the IBM’s transformation into a services company. This comparison is particularly silly because IBM was heavily invested in a hardware field that was being commoditized, whereas Blackboard is a software company (i.e. Blackboard has a history of not knowing what it is. Microsoft). Ok, let’s leave Bb.

Remaking education in the image of our desires

George Siemens

The current generation of students will witness the remaking of our education system. Education faces enormous pressure. Almost unanimously, teachers, parents, students, politicians, and random people who like having opinions, are declaring education broken. In higher education, the language of change is usually framed in economic and knowledge terms (i.e. Random advice.

Well Played, Blackboard

George Siemens

While Blackboard is unable to write a press release that includes clear statements like “we have purchased these companies&# , I have to give the company credit for the acquisition of Elluminate (and Wimba). With increased competition and general maturity of the market, Blackboard made what is likely its most important acquisition to date. The learning management system market has become somewhat of a commodity – Blackboard has attempted to hold high market share through acquisitions (notably WebCT and Angel). In the mean time, well played, Blackboard!

The grades are in for Education focused LMSs

The best system for the education market is Moodle. Education Rocks! There are numerous factors that have to be assigned when looking at a system for the education market.  Factors that include: System specifically built for the education market – some systems are universal – i.e. education & corporate; others are not. Blackboard Learn.

Instructure: we know. we learn.

George Siemens

I’ve been using Instructure for several weeks for a course that I’m teaching with Tecnológico de Monterrey on networked and connected learning. I’ve used a large number of learning management systems over the last several years, and Instructure presents one of the more impressive educator and end-user experiences. is a smooth process by the standars of any LMS.

Blackboard Acquires ANGEL Learning - LMS Consolidation Continues

Learning on the Leading Edge

Then, on May 6 of last week, Blackboard announced its intent to acquire Indianapolis-based, ANGEL Learning in a deal worth $95 Million, excluding transaction costs. Right now, I want to say a few things about the Blackboard announcement. Blackboard is aquiring ANGEL Learning, who provides enterprise e-learning software to over 400 clients, including 80 corporate clients. However, the deal is likely at least a short term headache for ANGEL’s clients, both corporate and education (it always is for the acquired). Why is Blackboard pursuing this deal? David.

E-Learning: A worldwide perspective

eLearning 24-7

A few days ago, I mentioned in my Linkedin group that I was reading the Himalayan Times which had an article about digital technologies and e-learning with education in Nepal. Education especially higher education, with K-12 right behind it and then the government.  Corporate is in the mix, but by far it is education. Well, I have seen a lot with Blackboard, especially in Western Europe – partially because the two other big players Desire2Learn and Instructure, are not marketing themselves in Western Europe and definitely not the rest of the world.

For example, Desire2Learn and Blackboard were there, Instructure was missing, along with many other well known education focused systems.  Before you say, “well it is more for corporate”, i.e. the show, I’d mention that all three of the above vendors are offering solutions for business as well. I’d add that there are folks who want an education focused system for their business “universities”, rather than the “corporate/business” systems, which I would recommend over those in education for the business side of the house.

A:   Well, quite a bit actually.

Light-weight learning analytics tools

George Siemens

This is a good example of a fairly simple, light-weight tool to analyze social interactions in an LMS like Moodle, Blackboard, or Desire2Learn. The best part of the tool is that it’s under the control of the educator (or learner). I’ve heard of SNAPP before – &# software tool that allows users to visualize the network of interactions resulting from discussion forum posts and replies&# – but decided to play around with it today. SNAPP does its analysis and posts the results on the bottom of your browser window.

LMS Selection Processes on Display

If your organization follows — or is considering — the university model for providing synchronous, instructor-led online educational events, you should take a look at Mark Smithers’ Learning and Educational Technology in Higher Education blog. Sakai, Moodle, Blackboard Vista, Angel, and Desire2Learn are among the systems included. How have various universities selected the course management systems (CMS) or learning management systems (LMS) they are now using? What processes did they follow? What criteria did they use?
