The Internet Time Community has been hosted on Ning for a little over three years. I was shocked and saddened when Ning announced that its free service was ending. Lots of non-profits had signed up on Ning. Ning could have at least provided a decent migration path away from their service. It wasn’t very difficult.

Global collaboration can be very small; can just be one teacher and one class with blogs or Skype. With blogs, move students from passive lurking on a class blog –> blog comments first. Examples: student blogging project , 10 weeks with a challenge to push students more each week. Communicate = Ning.

We managed to let people connect beforehand through a platform (ning ) and afterwards link participants to other networks or initiatives (like the outcome mapping community ). Last year we experimented with a ning platform, a twitter account and a few videos. In ning, there is a new application which is called member-mix.

They could also do it as comments on a blog. Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. Participation will eventually mean a lot of different things, but initially it will primarily be sharing ideas. A user can do this through posting to a threaded discussion quite easily. Typically they center around threaded discussions.
