Forums vs. Social Networks?

I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. They could also do it as comments on a blog. Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. They form a network of people via interactions, groups, etc. Options are simple.

And, of course WordPress is how I write my blog (e.g. As I say, things that end up in presentations and books tend to show up on blog first. I like FeedBlitz as a way to sign up for blogs, as it brings them into my inbox, instead of me needing a separate app. Reading a select list of blogs is one of my tactics.

A range of social networks : I use LinkedIn professionally, as well as Slack. A blogging or website tool : I use WordPress for Learnlets (i.e. Reflection: this overlaps with social networks. I also use Feedblitz to bring blogposts into my email. I keep my own bookmarks using my browser. And Twitter , of course.
