There are over 25 social media types – types include social networking, live casting, game platforms, virtual worlds, web conferencing, social bookmarking, social network aggregators, social news aggregators, blogs, app sharing (inc. I wonder how many of these vendors offer a micro-blogging like product in their product?

If they were doing it, Facebook like page, a crummy blog that looks nothing like a real blog, a Twitter like feed, maybe RSS, text chat and YouTube functions and upload/download angle. After all, there is a vendor who said to themselves, that everyone’s’ blog in their system, looks nothing like a real blog.

If you doubt this, look at how many vendors are now offering social learning – which they see as chat rooms, discussion boards, wikis, RSS feeds and a blog. . The problem thus lies in being behind the curve. Great, if it was 2008 or in the case of discussion boards and chat rooms, perfect for 1996.

micro-blog great, but how interactive can this be. We are sick of the RSS feed and then super lame YouTube links. So, if you include Facebook like in your LMS, wouldn’t it be logical to assume that people would follow the same approach and mechanism, that they use in the actual real Facebook product? What about Twitter?

The standard features are a blog and wiki. You can purchase an add on module which tosses in things like a RSS feed and some other features, but again, they are limited and so waaay in the past. If your goal is to incorporate and offer social learning as part of your LMS, then this is one system I would not recommend.

Some vendors feel a blog and wiki is more than enough. Vendors who believe social media is nothing more than a blog or wiki are living in fantasy land. There are vendors who believe social media is just a Facebook like page, where learners can follow other learners, post comments, app-share and there is a RSS feed.
