In today’s corporate world, you can not toss a rock in any direction without someone mentioning SharePoint as the glorious solution for social learning and in many cases a LMS. The first thing to realize is that SharePoint is not an out of the box solution, nor turnkey by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, Sony has found great success with SharePoint, but take a look at the resources available to them. If not, and you are planning on implementing SharePoint for your social learning success, here are a few reminders, before you dive right in. It depends.

I've started to work with Microsoft SharePoint for a lot of projects lately. People Don't Use SharePoint. People don't use SharePoint because it is not easy to access and documents are hard to find. Now, I know this is not true of all teams within organizations that use SharePoint. We've got a lot of good files on SharePoint. These teams also have their own reasons for not using SharePoint: The search function doesn't work well. People don't use SharePoint because they have not seen best practices. Improving SharePoint. Oh, and let's not forget that a lot of companies are Using Sharepoint for the exact purpose of organizing the efforts and assets of learning development. Maybe it's because I have not run into these situations, but my impression is that there's not that much need for digital asset management solutions around eLearning and that you are probably already served by your LCMS, enterprise content management, or SharePoint if it is an issue. Interesting post by Vic Uzumeri where he responds to a question that I asked him. We wanted to accommodate all types of video as input.

They have Articulate courses, classroom courses, SharePoint sites, etc. And they currently manage all of this using what I’ve seen at a lot of companies: network drives, naming conventions, some SharePoint. In Digital Asset Management – LCMS, ECM and SharePoint , I talk to how ECM (Enterprise Content Management) solutions might be a better fit for parts of this. But I’ve seen organizations cobble together solutions using SharePoint more than I’ve seen LCMS solutions. Or are they really using SharePoint or other ECM products for that? Sound familiar?

Set-up a repository for all revision submissions (SharePoint is a good tool for this). During my consulting engagements, the one thing that we were constantly battling was the number of times we had to revise (or rework) our elearning content. This is not to say that we did not care for revisions altogether, in fact, they are a very necessary part of any project. This is a must. Period.
