Right now, Im proofing a storyboard thats full of endless text bullets and boring software demos with no interactivity -- and theres really nothing I can do about it. Right now, Im feeling like just getting to good would be an achievement. Client demands, project schedules -- sometimes all you can do is churn it out. And they know it too.

In fact, its been almost two years since Ive written a storyboard and gone through the whole process. But I havent "done" a course in ages. The SMEs had to create the storyboards. Once the storyboard was created, the lead instructional designer reviewed it, fine-tuning things to create an "instructionally sound" experience. But before they even set the SMEs loose on the storyboarding process, they gave them a training in the basics of e-Learning and instructional design!

Somewhere on an old laptop Ive got examples of old project plans, design documents and storyboards. I gave the CDs away on interviews, lost them in moves. The stack is long gone and completely obsolete. Of course, you have to set it up in the first place, but then you have to keep it current. Take the Survey!

I dont do any online teaching at the moment, but I do a lot of online collaboration on projects -- reviewing content with SMEs, going over storyboards, etc. Pete and Eric, thanks for the comments. I think I overcompensate with the lack of non-verbal communication by hamming it up. This is not something I do consciously, I realize).

With all of the variables, I was constantly faced with the challenge of how to storyboard and how to make sure the simulation was effective. But how do you storyboard this? Just out of curiosity, what do you use to storyboard your stuff? Ive been storyboarding in Word for years and it continues to work for me. My "storyboard" is just the words and the descriptions of the graphics. When you storyboard in Word, have you created your own one-page template? I much prefer the macro. Thank you.

Other benefits of working with two monitors: 1) Have a source document open on one screen and be writing a proposal/storyboard/script on the other. I know when theres something new to read (gmail, rss) and I always have easy access to search. 2) Watch an online Adobe Connect presentation in one screen and blog about it in the other.

Estimating what fits into 30 minutes is hard - especially when youre staring at a course map/storyboard and trying to guesstimate. Another side of the picture is overall time versus chunking. I have worked with both corporate training department and elearning development houses, where I just had to do Analysis, Design and Storyboard.
