And it needs to start by educating those above to understand the realities of adult learning in the workplace, not the business of processing employees through courses Apparently this showed that: 70% see inadequate staff skills as a barrier to growth. 40% see a risk of employee skills being obsolete. 46% doubt that l&d can deliver.

Of course, some solutions never find problems and they disappear from view. It's fashionable to sneer at the idea that a particular technology is merely a solution looking desperately for a problem to justify its existence. The advocates of each of these could be accused of hunting for problems to solve in the world of learning technologies.

am of course a keen supporter of social media, informal learning et al, as is David Wilkins (as he pleads time and again in his posting). This should apply to all training, of course, but professionals are acutely aware of the value of their time and are not motivated by the idea of some time away from the day job. And, of course, all training should be, assuming it gets the job done. They like to network with other professionals of similar or greater reputation.
Let's assume we do really want to deliver a formal online, self-study course. By and large, the figures coming out of industry surveys in recent times have been kind to e-learning. Courses cannot keep up with today's knowledge. In Reuters, they are getting 3000 e-learning course completions a month; have now reached 65m minutes online with Books 24x7 and a huge ROI. The courses of yesterday don't work. The next generation will not want simple click and learn courses. serious gaming, etc. My view?
And in any assessed course - and however informal and learner-centred our strategy becomes these will still be needed, not least to become qualified as a CIPD member - assessment of learning is a given. But surely all evaluation is a measure of ROE: I expected to enjoy the course. Surely what's needed is a combination of the two.

At ThoughtWorks University, we put new hires on a real world project for five weeks of their course. The course correction takes just a few minutes.
