Our office has been receiving numerous requests to help incorporate social media tools into a variety of communication and education projects. Our clients want help creating blogs, wikis, collaborative workspaces, and social networks. You can’t mandate that your audience “be social.”. We’ve responded with cautious optimism.

Recently I was asked if I was OK with using SharePoint instead of social media software. My main reason - which may not seem like much on the outset - is that SP is document focused and social media is people focused. In the same way, both SharePoint and social media might be said to make similar journeys - they are both vehicles.

At DevLearn, many people lamented the difficulty of explaining the benefits of social media to their managers and peers. In thinking about the benefits of adding social to formal learning for a presentation I’ll be giving, I realized that the main reason to extend social activities into formal learning is for the additional processing it provides. While there is processing individually, social interaction provides more opportunities.
