In his posting Depressing study of L&D , Donald Clark quotes research by Coleman and Parkes in Spring of this year, which involved interviews with 100 key decision-makers at major UK companies. Apparently this showed that: 70% see inadequate staff skills as a barrier to growth. 40% see a risk of employee skills being obsolete.

More than half of employees in Spain and the UK undertake self-study e-learning, with Spain leading the way (56%) and France way behind (24%). Connie Malamed's posting First iPad University Course drew my attention to the mini MBA course being put together by Rutgers University and Apple’s higher education team. quot; First thoughts are, at least for me, a sense of excitement at such a bold new use of new technology. The majority of self-study e-learning is likely to be too slow, too long and too boring - they just want the key points. Self-study e-learning is too structured for this audience, which doesn't need or want the structure. The authors make a number of useful points about the unique problems of training this group.

Let's assume we do really want to deliver a formal online, self-study course. We make liberal use of stories, examples, case studies and scenarios, all of which have been carefully chosen to be recognisable and relevant to the learner. That's the theory anyway. After all these years, this situation is simply not good enough.

US studies show online learning beats the classroom on almost all counts. Today saw a tremendous gathering of the who's who of UK learning technologies in the historic debating chamber of the Oxford Union. The motion was as follows: "This house believes that the e-learning of today is essential for the important skills of tomorrow."

When I go tripping, I usually try to study as much as I can about the place where I'm heading. I've been on tour in South East Asia for the last few days and it's been great fun, I must confess. To think of it, a new workplace is similar to a new city. Yet, learning a new job seems to be significantly tougher than touring a new city. Or both?

In many cases, there just hasn’t been the specific studies that are close enough to make a reasonable inference. And it’s hard to coordinate large studies that are really generalizable for pragmatic reasons that include logistics and funding. In any case, you’re making inferences from a variety of studies and models.
