An interesting experiment by 22 year old Dublin student Shane Fitzgerald recently generated a healthy debate around the use of the Internet by journalists, and particularly Wikipedia. firmly believe that for the most part the information on Wikipedia is correct, otherwise it wouldn’t be the number one spot for research.

Wikipedia is a terrific reference tool if you (or your students) happen to be at an internet-connected computer, but it’s a lot harder to use as a reference tool when you’re out and about. Wikipedia. The scientific journal, RNA Biology , will now require all authors that submit a paper for review to the journal to also submit a summary of the article to Wikipedia. RNA Biology is now feeding original cutting edge research into Wikipedia. For academics you either love it or you hate it. love it! just love it.

I just wanted to relate something that I think shows the power of a Wiki in general and Wikipedia particularly. Of course, my son read the Wikipedia California Gold Rush page (it comes up first in Google). And it shows the beauty of a Wiki and Wikipedia It did point us to a detailed article on the California Trail.

got on a riff comparing Wikipedia to Britannica on a number of fronts. meetings I had the pleasure of meeting Jean Baptiste Souffron, who was the attorney at Wikipedia. So as I riffed yesterday I talked about how Wikipedia only had two employees which I assumed would be a lot less that Britannica.
