This Thursday I stuck a miner’s pan into shallow gravel and swished the water around, sloshing out the lightweight stuff. About a minute into this, a glint appears and then hides. Swirl, swirl. Shiny objects. Petroglyphs.

Big Bird at Big Sur

This afternoon we drove south on California Route 1 to Big Sur. Thanks in part to the California Coastal Commission, Big Sur has changed very little since my first visit more than thirty years ago. We came upon five California condors diving and swooping over the highway. It remains one of the most beautiful drives in the world.
