In the past few weeks I’ve been to Vermont, Louisiana, Pennsylvania (twice), California, and New York. In honor of the active elearning community and the upcoming holiday season, I’m going to include one free download through the end of the year. Today, it’s a free PowerPoint template based on the Tripit smartphone app.

A challenge with free software is that sometimes your organization isn’t comfortable with you downloading and installing applications that aren’t approved. Splashup is an image editing tool and photo manager. They also offer Splashup Light for download. PowerPoint Doesn’t Have to Be Boring. They both look very capable.

Picasa is a pretty simple solution, but one that may work for some of the basic tasks like cropping and image enhancement (especially if you take a lot of your own photos). I’ll be doing a session on PowerPoint and we’ll have two Build-A-Course sessions. 23: PowerPoint Doesn’t Have to Be Boring. February 22-23: St. Louis (ASTD).

My initial idea for the demo was beyond my resources, so I decided to look for photo frame pictures on istockphotos. The goal is to place the learner in the rain forest so we walk through the process of converting a simple PowerPoint slide to something more immersive. May 17 : Orange County California. That’s not ideal.

Use a Photo Management Application. Picasa or Windows Live Photo Gallery (both free) will scan your hard drive and locate images. Check out the Photo Fuse feature in Windows Live Photo Gallery (could the name be a little longer please). It’s pretty slick and could come in handy if shooting your own stock photos.

Since I had no time to build the graphics I wanted, I decided to change the huddled family image to a framed photo of a family. So I decided to switch from a single picture frame to Polaroid photos of each family member. Here are a few sets that I think would work well in an elearning course: Grungy Photos (set used in this demo).
