Two problems that I see with PPT being used as an authoring tool is that to make it engaging, fun and interactive you have to use what the product includes, and those templates are a mixed bag. . For those wondering, Adobe Captivate Prime, does not come with Captivate nor is Captivate in the cloud. What about?

Themes and customized templates- Many have it including the ability to do a custom skin of your own colors and branding. While I am thrilled to see more templates, what I am not thrilled about is the number of templates. Some are really lame and I would be unimpressed if I was a learner taking a course with that template.

I really like that they have templates for folks who are providing customer education (many authoring tools do not). If I was an Instructional Designer and I was choosing between Storyline or Captivate, I’d go Storyline. Captivate is so yesterday. Sure you can do less, but if you are getting this thing, why go basic?

Eventually the land saw Macromedia Breeze and Dreamweaver enter the lands, with these items called templates. Non-linear learning would continue, regardless of the template elves. The weapons including Authorware, Macromedia Director, DazzlerMax, Toolbook were the ones that separated the knights from the common folk. Hip Hip, Hip!

Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Captivate 6 – $899 (per license), you want the full e-learning suite? Fear #1 – Evil Clown Pricing. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed.

Lots of Templates – No longer satisfied with ten, now many vendors are offering extensive list of templates. There are a few vendors who offer the ability to accept other authoring tool built courses, such as those from Articulate/Captivate, beyond just their own authoring tool. . This however is not universal.

I loved that the background templates can match with a specific scenario, such as the healthcare one I saw with their avatars. Captivate – Overrated in my book. In fact, most folks have no idea that there are other authoring tools out there beyond Articulate, Captivate and Camtasia. . Ranking goes from #10 to #1.

It will have checklists and templates too. More e-learning vendors than in the past, including plenty of newbies – not so much “new” per se, rather new in terms of attendance, but yeah some “new” Adobe Captivate Prime – Adobe’s LMS, to launch in August (more on that in a sec.). Good Surprises.

Actually it was more of Dreamweaver that came with templates (at least IMO). Products like Captive, Claro, Lectora and Storyline enabled the ID folks to create robust courses. Oh, and sorry Captivate your tool is not easy. . They all had a learning curve. But wide adoption for the masses wasn’t there. Fast Forward.

Here is the thing, you have the money and resources to offer collaboration, templates and avatars. Adobe Captivate 6. I am hearing from some vendors that they are having issues with Windows 8 and that Microsoft typically makes it difficult to really make it work. Surely, you can get it done. At least they are doing something.

More and more vendors are going SaaS and I wouldn’t be surprised if Captivate goes that route in the next few years? One vendor (and they know who they are) have a lot of these game templates and are big in terms of selling them. Why do I say that? Even games that are HTML5.

This is not the same thing as picking some templates and scenarios and building, rather a strong sim will expect you to have instructional design and e-learning development skills. Uses MW Word – Yep, you can build courses in MS Word and then output to a course. They are out there, I wouldn’t use one, but they do exist.

WYSIWYG templates (either one flavor or multiple flavors) and minimal capabilities inc. mini and full previews, assessment tools, interoperability standards, multiple outputs, ADA 508 compliance, SAAS, include templates, as well as ones you can build yourself, etc. Adobe Captivate.
