We also have a game course where they create interactive games for learning to solve the needs of a client (again the students interact with external clients and produce a solution to their problem).

They have sensed an overlap between virtual worlds , games , and educational simulations on one hand, and yet they know that one does not equal the other. Games are fun ways to gain exposure and familiarity with some tools and ideas. Likewise, all educational simulations can be best understood as a very rigorous game. So What?

The first software element that makes up a virtual world is a synchronous learning tool similar to WebEx or Adobe Connect or Saba’s Centra. Using a virtual world or metaverse for training is not as science-fiction as it sounds. At a designated time, an instructor logs into the software as do the learners. This is similar to the Web 2.0

In a 3D world, the interaction with the students feels more intimate than with a 2-D distance learning application such as Centra, Horizon Wimba or Adobe Connect. Captured content via Centra, sent playback to vendor to transcribe and converted it into a minute script in aCNN-type presentation for delivery via an iPod. Rachel Vazquez and Pete Mitchell (alum) presented on how they used video in e-learning and how they had to convert video to an e-learning format.
