Let’s face it, the mention of training at work can inspire feelings of dread, whether you’re an employee who has to perform it or an organiser who has to get your unenthused employees to all do it. The good news is that eLearning-based training reduces many of the trials and tribulations associated with onsite training – for everyone. Here’s what you need to know about eLearning training.
What is eLearning training?
eLearning training essentially means electronic learning training. Instead of herding employees and workers into and learning space, lecturing them and then asking questions to check that they took everything onboard, it allows workers to be trained more effectively and in more than one location. Training with eLearning (eTraining) removes the passive nature of learning by adding the potential for interactivity. With resentful adults less susceptible to new ideas, the more-interesting nature of eLearning training makes it a far more effective training method for imparting new knowledge.

But training via eLearning still comes with limitations. It’s been around for years and still requires extensive work to create a course and minimal effort is put in place to make interacting with it an interesting experience for the learner. What’s becoming more effective is microlearning – creating small, bite-sized microlessons that reduce into easy-to-absorb chunks of information. Learning becomes more effective when only one new element is being taught and a learner doesn’t need to set aside a significant portion of their (valuable) time to grind through it all at once.
From a trainer’s point of view, creating microlessons can take minutes instead of weeks. There’s also the benefit that an entire course doesn’t become outdated quickly if something changes – just a single element needs to be updated. In order to embrace this style of eLearning training the trainer needs to find the right Learning Management System or LMS. A good LMS will allow a trainer to quickly create and update new lessons themselves although there are options to pay LMS providers to create the lessons for you. Be warned though, doing this can prove expensive and time consuming plus getting updates done down the line can add even greater expense and delay.

With smartphone proliferation reaching ubiquity, its fair to assume that all of your employees will own a smartphone or mobile device. As such, all employees, whether corporate, retail trainees or those in vertical markets, can access your microlessons at their own convenience whenever they want and wherever they are.
Suddenly, the headaches caused by creating courseware are diminished, the herding cats issue of getting employees into a training space is negated and even the most stubborn worker will run out of excuses for doing their eLearning training.
