We should, in short, strive to create a different type of academic collaboration system. However, as we have seen with Moodle, VLEs can cross over into enterprise use and do a very fine job. source efforts to provide more generic capabilities. This is the kind choice we should provide to the educational community.

I was with the head of e-learning of a multinational enterprise a few weeks ago and he was describing how he intended to develop a series of e-learning programmes to implement a core curriculum across Europe. And unless your developers are multi-lingual, localisation is indeed collaborative.

It doesn't offer the potential for collaborative work that a wiki can provide. Nor is it likely to be as helpful in locating and sharing expertise as an enterprise social networking tool. It doesn't, for me at least, have the power that blogging does as a stimulus for reflection.
