A message to CxOs about L&D myths

Clark Quinn

Informal learning is the key to innovation, and innovation is a necessary differentiation. Our LMS is all we need. Learning management systems (which is a misnomer, they’re course management systems) manage courses well.

Why bash the LMS?

Clark Quinn

In response to a query about why someone would question the concept of the LMS, I penned the (slightly altered, for clarity) response that follows: What seems to me to be the need is to have a unified performer-facing environment. I was asked whether a social system and an LMS, each with the same features, would be equivalent.

A case for the LMS?

Clark Quinn

My Internet Time Alliance colleagues Harold Jarche and Jane Hart have been (rightly) eviscerating the LMS. I see two key functions an LMS provides. The LMS model is that the learner comes to the LMS. This is a bigger problem, but an LMS isn’t going to solve it. That’s a course-centric model.

Learning Lessons

Clark Quinn

For the social week, I had them collaborate in pairs. First, the LMS interfered. Also, my grading scheme doesn’t fit into the default grading schema of the LMS anyways, so it wasn’t automatically doable anyways. And learn about the LMS earlier. (Ok, Ok, so I had some LMS anxiety and put it off…).

Learning Design Insights

I was tapped to host the Learning Design conversation (there were three others: LMS, Measurement, and Social Learning), and that meant that a subset of the group sat in on the discussion. We also talked about the benefits of collaboration, and knowing your audience. We covered other topics about design, too.
