Digital Learning Survey 2019 – Most Tech Doesn’t Stack Up

While the modern learning ecosystem continues to focus efforts on digital learning, 50% of respondents to Fosway Group’s Digital Learning Realities 2019 survey say their learning content platforms don’t have what it takes to meet the needs of the modern learner.

And despite the fact that organizations continue to invest heavily in digital learning initiatives, the vast majority of respondents — a staggering 88% — don’t believe their current platforms have the ability to effectively track and measure the impact of their learning assets.

In order to truly see the value of these digital learning investments, organizations need to upgrade their technology tools to a modern digital learning platform. Investing in a “next gen” Learning Content Management System (LCMS) can help close the analytics gap and drive actionable business insights.

According to Fosway Group’s 2019 Digital Learning Realities Research:

  • 88% of respondents say their organizations measure the impact of digital learning “ineffectively” or “not at all”
  • Only 34% of respondents said their current learning platform “is a good fit for the modern workforce”

Simply put, traditional learning management tools aren’t robust enough to meet the ever-expanding needs of modern learning organizations.

Fosway’s Research also explores the top areas of reported growth in digital learning platforms:

  1. Analytics – 75%
  2. Social Collaborative – 70%
  3. Virtual Classrooms – 68%
  4. Authoring Systems – 61%
  5. Learner Engagement – 53%
These top areas of growth are a strong indicator of the tools and capabilities these organizations realize they need in order to succeed in the modern learning ecosystem.

Enter the next gen LCMS.

The next gen LCMS bridges the gap between traditional learning management technology and the complex demands of modern learning organizations by bringing together authoring, publishing, delivery and comprehensive learning analytics all in one place, so organizations can truly get the most out of their content.

In fact, a next gen LCMS incorporates each of the top areas of growth in modern digital learning platforms identified by Fosway Group:

Analytics

Having in-depth analytics on learner behavior and performance — who, what, when, where, which version of content was accessed, and assessment results, if applicable, — provides much-needed visibility into how learning content is impacting your business. From data that can help authors improve content to metrics that can drive tangible ROI for your organization, the next gen LCMS provides detailed data that can easily be exported to any ther business technology you might already have in place, ensuring maximum usability and positive impact on your business' bottom line.

Social Collaborative

A centralized collaborative environment allows authors to work together cohesively, developing and storing learning content in a single cloud-based location, and ensuring users are always accessing the correct, current version of each piece of content. Since content is centralized and easily searchable, authors can quickly find and reuse content for their courses, lessons or other learning objectives. Built-in, collaborative web-based review tools are a hallmark of the next gen LCMS, allowing anyone inside or outside of your organization — such as outside consultants and subject matter experts — to efficiently review and provide feedback on learning content.

Virtual Classroom

Providing a centralized cloud-based location for all published content eliminates the need for separate tailoring for virtual classroom materials. Instructors can easily administrate all assessments and course materials from one location. Because the content is centralized and iterations are linked instead of created from scratch, once an update is made, the updated version is instantaneously pushed to all iterations. The next gen LCMS ensures that learners are always accessing the most up-to-date versions of your content.

Authoring Systems

Another hallmark of the next gen LCMS is a single-source authoring and publishing environment, which allows authors to create content once and easily re-use it in a wide variety of other formats, dramatically reducing content development time while also ensuring version accuracy. The next gen LCMS also makes it easy to publish content to many different outputs — such as a digital course, instructor-led printable lesson plan, virtual classroom training, eBooks and other formats — because content is stored as flexible XML and isn't locked into restrictive proprietary formats.

Learner Engagement

The ability to easily produce interactive content — and even import robust interactions such as games and simulations from any other authoring tool — allows authors to design for a higher level of engagement, and to truly personalize content at scale. The next gen LCMS allows users to tag content metatdata, so authors can tailor their content to each unique audience (based on factors such as location, language, role, etc.,) keeping learners engaged and creating true content persinalization, regardless of size.

Xyleme — the industry leader and developer of the only next gen LCMS — specializes in helping some of the world’s largest organizations reduce development time and gain actionable business insights while effectively manageing even the most complex content libraries.
