How to Understand Your Learner Personas and Deliver Personalized Training to Boost Knowledge Retention

Tailoring your elearning content to your learners will benefit them and your organization. But before you can personalize content to your learner personas, you must know who they are, and what makes them tick. While important for success, customizing content to learners is a struggle for 53% of companies, a Brandon Hall Group study titled ‘The State of Learning and Development’ found.

Getting to know your learners is as important as retailers getting to know their customers because the more you know about the learners, the more tailored content you can deliver to them.

In a co-hosted webinar, Brandon Hall Group and Docebo stated knowing your learner personas can be as simple as building their profiles around their title, areas of expertise, areas of interest, tenure, previous positions and outside hobbies.

Once you have this information on-hand, you can start to develop archetypes of similar personas and begin personalizing content to each.

Misconceptions of delivering tailored content

There is a common misconception that personalizing content to your learners is too time consuming for your trainers.

If this is a concern, consider these two things: personalizing content should begin before your learners are involved in your learning management system (LMS) and it is impossible to design courses for each individual learner.

Using Docebo Channels to start personalization early

There are many tools that can help with personalization before your learner begins. With its latest update, Docebo introduced Channels. This interface puts learning content into an easy to navigate grid pattern, based on their role, learning history and preferences. For example, if you hire a new salesperson, they will benefit from the personalized content you, as the administrator, has already put into the sales channel.

Go beyond formal coursework with Docebo Coach and Share

Famed scientist Bill Nye said, “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” This is the unofficial essence of Coach and Share. Formal learning is effective, but delivering personalized content to each user would be too time consuming. Thankfully, research shows traditional, formal coursework should not be the main teaching method supported by your LMS.

Coach and Share is a new, collaborative feature of Docebo’s LMS that provides a means for fluid informal knowledge transfer and feedback between your learners and experts. This blend of formal and informal learning supports learning as it happens in real life.

Benefits of tailoring content to your learner personas

The Brandon Hall Group follows companies with year-after-year KPI improvements, they call these companies High Performing Organizations (HiPOs). To measure success, they track the company’s revenue, profitability, customer satisfaction and market share, among other things.

Eighty-three percent of these HiPOs deliver personalized learning tailored to their learners. The Brandon Hall Group found 66% of other organizations deliver personalized learning.
