We decided to mute, similar to what we would do with a big group in a web conferencing tool like WebEx or Elluminate. TelePresence rooms are usually designed with a specific number of seats. Should we mute ourselves when we’re not presenting? But I think it was the wrong choice. Don’t Overload the Room.

This was amplified when George Siemens did a highly participatory session where he had the audience list out design considerations for several things like formal vs. informal, etc. My gut tells me that if I had designed things in a particular way, we could have had some truly amazing sessions. Not a lot of instructional design, just getting people to share content. Tried to show video of Meet Charlotte, but video doesn’t work well over Elluminate. Focus on the tacit knowledge that is usually hard to share. Get experts to share, make it easy for them.

I have also presented recently at one of Steve Hargardon's live Elluminate global webinars, and have to say that the experience was very similar to the MOOC. MOOCs also host online discussion, solo and group activities and other learning activities designed to promote critical discourse, reflective actions and discursive learning.

I’m always cognizant of what Ellen Wagner (formerly with Adobe) said while writing about web conferencing technologies around the time Blackboard bought Wimba and Elluminate and combined them to create Blackboard Collaborate (for edu-types, I’ll insert the ‘muwhahahaha’ just for you). Get a license to Webex, Elluminate or something similar (perhaps even a free web conferencing tool like DimDim) to provide the capability to run live online sessions. Train up as many of the training team as possible in content design and development, setting up courses in Moodle and facilitating in a virtual classroom.

Why the heck doesn't each tool – WebEx, Adobe Connect, Elluminate, etc. These tools should hire some Mac designers to create something that's not 3D, but that gives a greater feeling of presence. Yesterday, I was at a bowling alley / arcade and several of the games at an arcade had customizing my ride kids of features.

BigBlueButton is an active open source project that focuses on usability, modularity, and clean design -- both for the user and the developer. I have used www.dimdim.com before and Elluminate (but this is not open source.) Elluminate is a really nice tool but not open source. The project is hosted at Google Code.

Here we asked attendees to rate the design of the webinar: The easy thing to do is to conclude that an informal setting doesn’t work online, but I don’t believe that. During the Elluminate sessions, we often had heady academic discourses by those running the session, sometimes allowing little time for feedback. This stung!
