Let me explain why I don't call myself an Instructional Designer - I do a lot more than design instruction! To me the word instructional brings forth notions of teacher led instruction in formal education settings. We design so that people can do what they need and/or want to do more effectively. .

Jane Hart raises an excellent point with her post, Learning without Design. The way I see my work is that it’s not so much about helping people learn things, but instead it is about helping people do things (their work) ‘better’…….and and I do this through design. and I do this through design.

I have been reading articles lately from the Journal of Learning Design. For those who don't know of the journal, it is a journal that focuses on designing the learning environment to assist the learning process, concentrating on a design focus rather than technology and looking to move beyond a traditional instructional focus.
