Hi,

I would like to seek advice from Adobe experts in understanding if we can use Adobe XD as an authoring tool similar to Captivate or others in developing eLearning course at all.

Any inputs and guidance will be helpful.

I don’t disagree with Lieve. However, I do believe that the utility of Adobe XD is expansive. While you can’t go from development to finished eLearning product with Adobe XD, you can use XD in storyboarding.

If you want to show how an eLearning lesson would work to a client, you can storyboard it in XD rather quickly.

That said, Captivate isn’t friendly. While I’m the biggest proponent for Captivate I know, I don’t love it for its lack of user friendliness, steep learning curve, and most annoyingly, the unfixed bugs that travel with it from version to version causing you to have to find work arounds in forums.

What I would like to see in the future is a workflow in Captivate that would allow you to pull in your storyboard, developed in XD, directly. Just like you can do in PhotoShop and Ai.

You may know that I am not only a Captivate user. I have tried all the Adobe apps, did teach Photoshop for 20 years (also some Illustrator, Audition and InDesign).  Draft was one of the first apps, and it is almost not used. Photoshop and Illustrator have much more limited and totally different goals from Captivate, and both are part of ‘big’ Adobe, the CC applications. They also have unfixed bugs BTW. Storyboard is only a very first step in real eLearning, may be sufficient for a presentation like PPT but not for what I see as an engaging eLearning course.

Personally I find Capture as app a lot more useful for Captivate, and no one talks about it because marketing is now on XD…. for how long? A year or so ago, much fuzz about Rush, who is using it today?

I also have my list of wishes for Captivate, and am perhaps the most ardent bug hunter…. sorry not to be so convinced of the value of XD for eLearning courses.

I have seen others use XD to prepare e Learning (think storyboarding and prototyping).

Would love to see such examples, because personally I don’t find it that useful for Captivate courses which use to be non-linear and having a lot of interactivity.

Hi Lieve!

Joe Ganci did a webinar for Traning Mag Network showing how he used XD for storyboarding/prototyping. Not having used it for other than web development, I saw pros and cons. Nice to be able to share a prototype with others or as another way to plan…but somewhat duplicative work to get content into Captivate. Depends on work style maybe?

Thanks for the information, but Draft makes it easier; no duplicate work.

Hi Suresh, Adobe XD is a prototyping tool where you can create design specs, UX prototypes, and storyboard a particular workflow. Adobe Captivate is an authoring tool for eLearning. Any course created in Captivate can be published in any SCORM-compliant LMS, like Captivate Prime, which your learners can consume it. Let us know if you want more information.

Saurav, thanks for the update on XD. We are aware of Captivate and its capabilities and will continue to use them as required.

That is not really the focus of XD (played a little bit with it) which is a tool for Experience Design. I know, some users will use InDesign to create interactive courses, others will use Animate CC to create courses but THE real eLearning authoring tool with the most features and the possibility to integrate with other Adobe applications will be Captivate. There is no doubt at all in my mind about that. If you only want video, you don’t need Captivate because there is no interactivity in video. If you only want to convert a PPT to HTML use Presenter. But if you want real eLearning courses, that are capable of building engaging interactivity, of transferring results to LMS gradebooks… no doubt.
