Authoring Tools- The DevLearn Experience
NOVEMBER 7, 2011
Last week, I attended DevLearn. Simply put, one vendor has over 200 Flash-based templates in their product. Not only was it quite present at DevLearn, but in general, this is one of the new “hot” items in the space. Microsoft has announced that their next browser version will support only HTML5 and not Flash. know people are going to tell me that you can view Flash on alternative browsers with the iPad. have tried the big three alternative browsers that support Flash, and all of them are buggy. readily admit that I was unsure what to expect.

DevLearn 2008 - Day 2 Recap
NOVEMBER 13, 2008
I kicked off Day 2 at DevLearn by facilitating a Breakfast Byte session on DevLearn Live! Not many people showed up, but Wendy Wickham , Matt Wolf , and I spent the time well by discussing our current projects, our impressions of DevLearn, favorite technologies / tools, and more. 605 - Using Flash CS3 and AIR to Build Desktop Applications ( Dan Carr ). liked his style; it was easy for me to tune in and absorb lots of great Flash / AS3 / AIR info from him. Building a basic AIR app (desktop Flash app) is much easier than I realized. Nice homage. Web 2.0

Storyline and ZebraZapps: seriously powerful, seriously simple
Clive on Learning
NOVEMBER 2, 2011
Here at DevLearn 2011 in Las Vegas I've got authoring tools on my mind. It exports to HTML 5 as well as Flash, although I'm not sure they've perfected this yet. This is a big deal, because iPads and iPhones don't support Flash. It is about time to move on from Flash anyway, because you hardly see it on everyday websites anymore. Anyone who wanted to do top-end development had to do serious coding in Flash. Because I have been able to take a look at two new tools today, which I'm sure are going to have a major impact. First up is Storyline from Articulate.
What did I get out of DevLearn?
NOVEMBER 9, 2007
Going into DevLearn I was a little unsure of what to expect considering it was my first conference like this. I was hoping to get lucky and find some miracle idea or resource that will make it easy for me to implement eLearning at a minimal cost. One of the presenters is going as far as emailing us flash files she used in a course so that we can re use them. Well, I didn't come back with any miracle ideas or resources but I did come back with a lot of gems that if I follow through on will easily earn %100 ROI on the $1000 investment.

DevLearn and the Adobe Learning Summit! And that's an industry leading software company focusing a major effort on the eLearning industry and the many elearning developers that have been using their tools to improve the learning process for so many. I was a very early user of Authorware , Director , and of course, FLASH. Ya know everyone's complaining about Flash not being on the iPhone, but maybe Apple's waiting for the new Shockwave? This is quite possibly one of the coolest things I've seen in my eLearning career. At least it felt that way to me. Am I dreaming? Maybe.
Several Nuggets of Wisdom - Recapping my Breakfast Bytes at DevLearn
The Learning Generalist
NOVEMBER 18, 2010
At DevLearn 2010 , I ran a couple of Breakfast Bytes on Social Learning and Elearning. At some point we also discussed that we don't need to do everything inside a flash based course. This ends my reporting responsibilities from DevLearn. breakfast byte is a freeform discussion on a specific topic amongst a bunch of interested people. Change management is a crucial competence.
Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market
OCTOBER 17, 2012
Granted the others accept Flash, but when the folks who make Flash say they are moving over to HTML5, you don’t need a witch doctor to tell you to watch out for that Zombie next to you. Over the past month, the number of people who have told me they are seeking an authoring tool that outputs to HTML5 has been enormous. No one says to me, “oh can it output to flash?”
Does Your Client Need to Know You’re Using PowerPoint?
OCTOBER 2, 2012
When I managed a team of Flash developers I rarely ran into the same branding requirements that I did when using PowerPoint. The final output is Flash. And most clients don’t know much about Flash. However, if they do find out that I am using PowerPoint, then I have to deal with many of the branding issues that I’d never have to deal with if I were working in Flash.

Experience, the API
NOVEMBER 5, 2012
Last week I was on a panel about the API previously known as Tin Can at #DevLearn, and some thoughts crystallized. You could even send your learners out to do a flash mob ;). Touted as the successor to SCORM, it’s ridiculously simple: Subject Verb Object: e.g. “I did this”, such as ‘John Doe read Engaging Learning’ but also ‘Jane Doe took this picture’ And this has interesting implications. There’ll need to be places to record these actions, and ones to pull together sequences of recommendations for learning paths, and more.
