An announcement board kept us up to date, the discussion forums were easy to find, and the final assessment was explained clearly from Day 1. We share knowledge on Twitter, contribute to discussions on LinkedIn, read books, write blogs, comment on blogs, subscribe to industry magazines, share links to online articles, watch videos, and participate in MOOCs. OK, a missing link in this solution is a social forum. If an operator can’t find what they need, a social forum enables them to ask their crowd of peers. Also, by keeping tabs on the discussions in the forum, the L&D professional can identify gaps in the solution, and review the content that is evidently unclear or difficult to find. Forums vs. Social Networks?

Clark Quinn

I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. user can do this through posting to a threaded discussion quite easily. So, I'm trying to figure out what's going to be the right software / service to adopt, but I'm also trying to think about the differences in: Forum / Threaded Discussion / Group Examples are Google Groups and Yahoo Groups. Typically they center around threaded discussions. Possibly they've never used threaded discussions either. Options are simple.

Dont Waste Your Time

Online discussion boards, and associated activities that use them, can get a bit of a bad name sometimes either through inacitivty or lack of quality posts to abusive or bullying. Reading: Learner engagement in MOOCs

VLEs are somewhat to blame for the apathy or lack of engagement in online activities, especially discursive or forums or comment sections – you’re locked into one specific tool for engagement. Sometimes the forum or comment or discussion board is the wrong tool for the intended learning / communication. There are threaded discussions, which are often very large.
