Distance learning has been on the rise over the years, and it really comes as no surprise given the benefits.

Have you ever taken an online course?

Chances are you probably have at some point. I have taken quite a few over the years. Everything from a formal distance learning program offered by a local university to online course offerings from industry experts. While the experience can vary in terms of delivery and effectiveness, the truth is that I much rather prefer a virtual learning setting compared to the traditional classroom.

Don’t get me wrong, workshops can offer some tremendous value. For me they get a bit tiring depending on the topic. Being forced into a hotel conference room for a few days doesn’t always make for a good time. Plus, workshops can be quite expensive. That’s just one reason why I would opt for distance learning opportunities.

Why Distance Learning Resonates with Learners

In a world where people have 20 things vying for their attention at one time, distance learning offers flexibility for education. Here are just six reason why people often prefer distance learning over anything else:

Freedom to Choose – Online education (degrees in particular) allow you to take on more topics and to get access to programs that may not be available in your immediate geographic area. You can also choose when you take the course content, and which programs (teachers) make the most sense for your goals.

Meet Others – Distance learning means that you get a chance to meet and network with people who have similar interests from all over the world.

Set the Pace – You don’t have to worry about missing something important that the instructor said when you are enrolled in a distance learning program. You can take (and re-take) course content at your own leisure.

Your Schedule – Have a full-time job? Not a problem. Distance learning works with your schedule and not the other way around when compared to traditional secondary education.

Cost – It is no secret that distance learning is far less expensive compared to the classroom.

Less Travel – Some distance learning programs require that you travel at least once for an orientation or final project/exam. Others don’t require travel at all. This saves you both time and money.

What about you? What do you like about distance learning?
