5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. Actually it already has with some end users.  I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. No longer are they stuck saying, well it would something like this – and show an image or hard doc, now the end user can experience it. . Augmented reality opens those doors. Open source toolkits already exist, so I am projecting an increased use with education and businesses who have the tech folks in house to build such apps. Boring.

Best of the Best: Content Authoring Tools

eLearning 24-7

That said, for a freebie -and yes, I said freebie (open source) it has a lot of power. Lastly, it looks like a course when you publish it -regardless if it is Flash or HTML5 – not a PDF or word doc or something that is a hybrid of the two. While traditionally best of the best are announced in December, I decided why wait.  I mean it is not like something is going to change in just a few weeks for any such product. Before I get to the list, people always want to know how do I decide what constitutes the best of the best. Here are my criteria. An additional note.

E-Learning 101

eLearning 24-7

To put it in its most basic wordage, its a giant file repository with multiple sub-folders that contain a variety of content (materials, docs, audio/video, whatever), where people can access it, view it, download it (depending on how it is built) and share it. Option for some people: going open source (which has pros, but honestly has a lot of cons). This post is dedicated to my father, Frank J. Weiss, who passed away on 4-7-12.  He often found it difficult to explain to others what I did and more importantly, what is e-learning. Wake Up! New systems, terms and information.

How to succeed with online learning for colleges and universities

eLearning 24-7

Why deal with an open source system that will cost you more than you think, when one that is turnkey will suffice. Unless their web cam moves where they move to (and some do), then you have zero idea if Sally is providing the answers on a doc. If you are a bricks and mortar college or university, you may be considering offering online courses. Heck, you may have already begun to offer them. The problem is there is a right way to do it and lots of wrong ways to do it. What I’m seeing is a lot of bad. History. Sadly, they would be wrong. Research on online universities.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

Courselab – The best free open source product on the market. As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing.  For the most part, that is a great thing, but as you are about to read, some are not. Continued growth for open source solutions; Moodle is still the king; especially in education, although it is slowly starting to appear in the business and government side. #2  Mobile Learning. Real Time collaborative tools, such as integration with Google Docs or desktop sharing, slowly starting to appear. Towards the latter part of last year, we started to hear how the LMSs were near death.  That smartphones were the answer to mobile learning. Tablets? Who is using those things? Social learning? Emerging Technology?  Ha. Well, guess what.  Early Indicators. #1  LMSs.

Beware the cloud

George Siemens

Web-based tools like Google Docs, Twitter, wordpress, delicious, etc. An API is at best a pacifier to sedate the majority, but it is a far cry from open source. To paraphrase Mark Pilgrim : open enough works for running programs now, but it is a long term sacrifice of freedom I’ve found personal benefit to moving more and more of my information into “the cloud&#. provide the freedom to access my resources regardless of device. The development of smart phones over the last several years makes this model of data creation/access particularly valuable.

CloudCourse – Is it really a learning platform?

Upside Learning

Being open source will definitely help it reach a wide audience. think, next in line is integration with Google Docs as it would definitely make a lot of sense to have an activity which links in to Google Calendar and has a host of Google Docs around it pre and post the activity. And that would definitely be news! That, however, is still something to be seen.

LMS Vendors: U Can Survive – Innovate, Invigorate and Invent

Well, considering that I’ve heard from sources that ADP has been sniffing around the LMS space, I wouldn’t say it is so far-fetched.  Open source document viewer and docs – think Google Docs or spreadsheets, but you create them – or use similar apps – plenty of code and apps can be found; people access these open source programs in their LMS and save them in their LMS. Again, open source programs exist today that you can use as a feature within your LMS. No need to have multiple windows open.

So what is software worth?

Clive on Learning

With the costs of manufacture tumbling as retailers source from the Far East, along with a general easing of import restrictions, the costs of clothing in the high street have fallen to almost unbelievable levels. Then along came open source and a host of freebie applications, supported by advertising. At the moment I'm either using or considering using all of the following: Moodle , the open source virtual learning environment. DimDim , open source web conferencing. The same cannot be said for my open source and free software.

Microsoft and Google

George Siemens

Between Apple, Google, and open source software, innovation abounds. New devices (iPhone), views of software (cloud computing), and applications (Google Docs) have generated a new spirit of progress around information and communication technologies. For most of the late 80’s and into early 2000, innovation on the desktop seemed slow or even non-existent. Microsoft dominated the personal computer experience. That has changed. Microsoft recognizes the threat and is responding by developing an online version of its Office suite.
