Using Instagram For Social Learning

While it may not be obvious at first, some of today’s most popular programs can be used in educational contexts.

We have seen that Twitter can be used in a blended learning context, Facebook as a learning management system, and even Instagram within a classroom setting.

Instagram has become extremely popular over recent years, so it only makes sense that it too has its role to play in education 🙂 .

If you are not familiar with Instagram, it is an online app that allows people to share photos and videos. It also links to other popular social platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Flickr.

As always, remember that the effectiveness of using programs like Instagram in learning contexts is not upon the tool itself.

It is all about execution. Just because your learners may use this platform for entertainment doesn’t mean that they will accept it in an educational context. In fact, if you haven’t set these expectations, then you run a significant risk of the tool becoming a distraction.

Make sure that you lay a solid foundation before introducing any edtech application. Slowly create a culture where course content is supplemented by digital assets.
