UPSIDE LEARNING BLOG APRIL 30, 2012 Mobile Learning And The BYOD Movement Trawling through my feeds across various social media, I’ve been noticing a spurt in the number of discussions around the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) movement. Some organizations have embraced it with open arms while many are still apprehensive about security risks that BYOD poses. What makes BYOD popular? You can read more about the survey findings here. Why are organizations apprehensive? | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS APRIL 30, 2012 Twitter: do's and don'ts It took me a while to understand Twitter. spent a long time taking the view that it was an addictive waste of time and pretty useless for in-depth conversations. realise now that I hadn't grasped when Twitter should and shouldn't be used, and how to get the best out of it. The following two lists are based on my experiences. I'd love to hear from others too. Do treat Twitter like your work kitchen, water cooler or staff room. You wouldn't spend all day there, and you wouldn't expect to be aware of every conversation taking place while you weren't there. Do dip in every now and again. Don't. | TOPYX SOCIAL LEARNING APRIL 30, 2012 Social Learning and Student Engagement Student engagement and how to make your social media “learning” environment secure in academia. It’s not about knowledge transfer In 2009 I listened to Peter Senge’s keynote address at the CSTD national conference. His research findings showed that the average life expectancy of large companies is about 30 years, but some are over 200 years old, and the key driver for their longevity is organizational learning. Individual learning in organizations is irrelevant, as work is almost never done by one person alone. Knowledge, Senge said, is the capacity for effective action (know how) and it is the only aspect of knowledge that really matters in business and life. Value Learning really spreads through social networks. MORE >> -

MINDFLASH | MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2012 Can Doodling Actually Enhance Training? Apparently, Yes We usually think of doodling on your legal pad during a long presentation as a way to stay sane. But it may be even more beneficial than that. An April 24 Wall Street Journal article pointed out that several high-tech companies like Facebook are responding to a growing body of evidence that suggests that doodling — sketching ideas out graphically, even if crudely — can simplify communication, fuel collaboration, and help generate new ideas. Some companies have even gone so far as to hire “graphic recorders” to boil entire presentations down into cartoon form for employees. MORE >> -

When I heard that Deloitte had purchased more than one hundred acres to construct a leader development facility in Dallas, I was stunned. What were they thinking? Then I heard that, in the midst of the great recession, they intended to spend as much as three hundred million dollars in constructing their center.
